Limited editions vs open editions — what’s the difference (and why it matters)?

Limited editions
Limited editions are exactly that, limited. A fixed number are released, and once they’re gone, that artwork is retired for good. Because there’s a set quantity, limited editions are more collectible and are often chosen by people who love the idea of owning something with real scarcity.
They also come with proof of authenticity, like a certificate that’s signed and numbered, confirming the edition size and your print number.
(You might also hear collectors talk about lower numbers being “more desirable”, but really, the value comes from the scarcity and the story behind the piece.)

Open editions
Open editions can be printed again and again as many times as the artist wants, so that means they don’t carry the same scarcity.
What I do at Alicia Bourley Art?
All of my artworks are released as limited editions, and every piece comes with a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity. So once they are gone, they are gone for good.
I have already had 3 series totally sell out in the past year so when they are totally sold out, I take them off my website.
But most importantly of all….you should truly love the art you choose. A good rule of thumb is: if you can’t stop thinking about a piece and nothing else compares, grab it while you can. Because art is an investment in happiness.
